Andriy and Taras Kogut are well known ambassadors of Blue Bay Cheese on the Mornington Peninsula, in Melbourne and in Sydney. The identical twins grew up in the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine, where they learnt the art of cheesemaking from their grandmother who believed in the health benefits of fresh yoghurt. Grandma also taught them to be self-sufficient and never give up. Like many newcomers, the Koguts say that making it in the new country was a driver to their achievements. Starting a business in the new country with very limited English, no business network support and having to learn the Australian regulations and business practices was a huge challenge for the brothers and their families.
Selling our products at farmers markets has been a great way of learning English and the Australian way of life, meeting interesting people and making friends. We were so happy to feel welcome in Australia and proud to make a difference to our families and to many people around us. When our factory opened in Mornington in 2005, we started producing a variety of yoghurts and cheeses by the century-old recipes from the Central Europe. Andriy is responsible for marketing and customer relations, while Taras focuses on the production and the technical aspects of the business. There was some rivalry between us when we were children, but now we are very close and work together. We’ve got common interests. We share passion for our business, develop new ideas and try to have fun along the way. Taras recalls: “I never forget the day we both drove to the Mornington Pier for the first time. We were riveted by how sparkling the bay was. We felt instantly that something good was going to happen in this place. It was an inspiration for both of us." When our parents came to visit us they decided to stay and help us. Making it in a new country means that your family is your strength. We have grown up in a rural environment in a simple agricultural community used to sharing and helping. At the factory we use simple techniques for all our fresh cheeses and yoghurts. Everything is controlled by hand, not by computers. We use no preservatives and we work with small batches. We love the feedback about our products and our customers have become part of our adventure. Our work brings us in contact with a lot of different people and our business is buzzing with action.
